"Joseph H. Purvis, a life long resident of Livingston Manor, died at
his home near the village Thursday morning, September 2nd, following
an illness of a complication of diseases covering a period of over
two months.
"The deceased was born at Livingston Manor, July 9, 1850, his
parents being the late Thomas D. and Martha Grant Purvis, who were
among the earliest settlers of the village.
"During the early seventies, Mr. Purvis became engaged in the
butcher business with his father, which was continued until 1880
when he became a wholesale dealer of cattle, shipping several car-
loads each year to the New York market. In 1905 he engaged in
farming which was followed until his death.
"He was united in marriage to Lillie M. French of Livingston Manor
on November 21, 1883 and to them was born one daughter, Katherine.
"Mr. Purvis was a man well-known throughout this locality and with a
wide circle of friends, who held him to high esteem. He was ever
ready to be of service to his friends and neighbprs and was greatly
respected by all who knew him.
"Survivors are his wife and daughter, also one sister and two
brothers; Mrs. M.E. Scriber of Monticello, Charles of Middletown and
Walter of Binghamton.
"The funeral, which was largely attended, was held from the
Presbyterian Church, Saturday afternoon, September 4th, in charge of
the astor Rev. D.G. Lawson. Interment was in the family plot in the
cemetery near the church."
