Notes for Josephine Augusta Gates:
Josephine was born in Pennsylvania, but was raised in central Illinois. After her mother died at the age of 15 she lived with her uncle Perry Commodore Burdick and his wife Sarah Stout in Stark County, Illinois.
She was married to Robert Erickson for over 25 years. The 1910 census for Lacon, Marshall County, Illinois listed her as divorced. However, I have not yet found a divorce decree. Stories from her daughter state that he left when she and her twin sister were very young.
Josephine was employed as a laborer at the Lacon Wool Mill. According to her daughter Blanch, she also took in laundry and sewing to feed and cloth her children after her husband Robert moved to Peoria.
After her children were grown and married, Josephine moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
