Daniel Van Aken owned one of the best farms in the Neversink Valley. During the raids of the Tories and Indians under Brant, July 1779, the savages burned the Machackemeck church and nearly wiped out the settlement. They visited the school house to the north east of Van Auken's residence and killed and scalped Jeremiah Van Auken, Daniel's son, and burned the latter's barn. Daniel's wife Leah, escaped by lying concealed in a ditch overgrown with grass and flag plants. The lives of the terrified school children were saved by Brant, who marked the girl's aprons with a substance of black. This the girls transferred to the boys and the Indians seeing the sign of their chieftain passed them unharmed.
This family lived in the Town of Deerpark NY, known as the 'lower neighborhood" of the Minisink Region. The home of Daniel Van Auken was designated as a fort by order of the Committee of Safety in 1778 at the time of Brant's Indian raids.
