[Mungeer1.FTW]

As far as I can gather, the Jacob Roosa family lived in the Liberty or Neversink area to around 1858. William's death certificate states he was born in Liberty and his younger brother Garrett's states he was born in Neversink. It was then, as stated in William's Civil War pension records that his William's moved to an "area now called Livingston Manor", Sullivan Co., NY. There he was involved in the lumbering business as a laborer.

William Roosa served with Company H, 143rd Regiment, New York Vol. Infantry during the Civil War. At age of 24 years, he enlisted at Goshen, Orange Co., NY to serve one year and was mustered in as private on October 13, 1864 under Captain George H. Decker. Records indicate he was 5' 10 1/2", 180 lbs., brown hair, brown eyes and fair complexion. He marched with General W.T. Sherman on his "March to the Sea" from Atlanta, GA to Goldsboro, NC. Near Savannah, GA, on December 10, 1864, "while on the march and greatly fatigued he with his company were sent out as skirmishers upon the appearance of the enemy and while hurriedly crossing a field in which were several ditches [he] in jumping said ditches with heavily loaded knapsack and cartridge box fell [on the opposite bank] and ruptured himself." The resulting scrotal hernia he suffered impacted his health for the remainder of the war as well as his life. His company saw action in the Battle of Bentonville, NC, March 19-21, 1865 but it doubtful he participated since he was less than full strength. He served to the war's end and mustered out with company on July 20, 1865 at Washington, D.C. On July 22, 1865, William spent a night in a hospital in New York City suffering from "pleurisy in the right side." He recovered from this and returned to his parents home in Livingston Manor.

War department records and newspaper accounts state William and Roxy Ann purchased and started living on the farm in March, 1866 after marrying on February 11, 1866 at the home of the bride in Parksville, NY by Justice of the Peace George W. Bush. . The only records located so far indicate the farm consisting two pieces of property of 48 and 53 1/4 acres respectively were bought on January 11, 1888 for $1,500.00 from George F. And Louisa Sutherland of Liberty, NY by William M. Roosa.

William was a farmer and operated a saw mill. His war injuries prevented him from strenuous work because afterward he was "laid up for up to three to four days." He participated in light farm work and earned income as a salesman of sewing machines and books, selling goods on commission and his farmhouse on Aden Road Liberty, NY also doubled as a boarding house which was called "The Shady Grove House". From that he received his nickname "Shady Bill".
William's Civil War records are numerous, consisting mostly of applications for increases in pension amounts for disabilities incurred on the battlefield. In October, 1903 his listed disabilities on his pension application included chronic diarrhea, piles, rheumatism and resulting heart disease, all of which supposedly were a result of the rupture suffered near Savannah, GA. His original application for a disability of a hernia was on September 14, 1883 for which he received $4.00 per month. Thereafter, the pension increased as follows: $8.00 on December 2, 1896; $12.00 on November 6, 1901; $14.00 on October 21, 1903; $17.00 on June 17, 1907; $24.00 on December 13, 1911; $30.00 on May 21, 1912 resulting from the Act of May 11, 1912; $32.00 on June 10, 1918; and $50.00 as a result of the Act of May 1, 1920. Affidavits from many of William's fellow soldiers had to be taken because no medical records or official documentation existed of his injury. William sought little help from the company physicians and attempted to cope with the injury the best he could in the field. Besides obtaining the affidavits, William had to endure many physical exams also to prove his disabilities. The following helped by suppling eyewitness accounts to verify how and when the injury occurred and its effects on William and his ability to perform his duties and work: William D. Annis, Edward Barker, William Gordon, John Calkins, Joseph Ward, Matthew Decker, close friend and tent mate James D. Lare, Chauncey S. Fisk, 2nd Lieutenant Alexander H. Brown, John Lamoneax, brother and tent mate Garrett S. Rose, Joseph Taylor, brother-in-law George A. Barnhart, brother-in-laws and tent mates Joseph P. and Samuel Andrus Lewis. Upon William's death, Roxy Ann received a pension of $30.00 per month on June 7, 1921 resulting from the Original widows Pension Act of April 19, 1906. This also had to be supported by affidavits by her surviving brother and sisters who were present when she was married because there existed no public record of their marriage, no church record existed since they were married by a justice of the peace and fire destroyed the certificate they did have. Samuel A. Lewis, Elizabeth "Lizzie" Wordon, Matilda "Tillie" Barnhart and friend James D. Lare all provided written proof of the marriage. Unfortunately she received only five months worth before her own death in November of the same year.

The following advertisements were found in 'The Liberty Register' February 7, 1896 Pg. 3 Col. 4 and April 17, 1896 Pg. 3 Col. 5:
"Have you seen the new model Davis Machine, 1894, entirely new?
If you wish to purchase or exchange a sewing machine, address W.M. Roosa, Liberty, N.Y. - 1245
Genuine needles and parts furnished for all sewing machines by W.M. Roosa, Liberty, N.Y. - 1245
All kinds of sewing machines cleaned and repaired. I make them work, or no pay. W.M. Roosa, Liberty, N.Y. - 1245"

The boarding house was named The Shady Grove House. Reference made to it as the Shady Nook House may have arisen from the fact that Cold Spring which was located just up the road from the farmhouse was also called Shady Nook. Fire destroyed most of William and Roxy Ann's possessions shortly before William's death in May, 1921. Among the items destroyed was their marriage certificate and William's Civil War Pension certificate.

Following is from the 1907 edition of "Summer Homes", published by the O&W Railroad, page 88, - "Liberty, Sullivan County, N.Y. - 120 Miles from New York. Fare, $2.40 .... Liberty Station - Liberty Post-Office .... W.M. Roosa - Shady Grove House; 1 1/2 miles; open all year. Accommodates 50: terms $6 and $7, children $3 and $4; free transportation; the house is situated on an elevation among the mountains; lighted with gas; spring water; bath; liberal table; plenty of fresh milk, maple syrup, vegetables, eggs, etc.; heated rooms for winter guests; large, airy rooms suitable for families; short distance from Lake Ophelia and the race track. Write for further particulars, Lock Box No. 617."

DISASTROUS BLAZE - Barn And Contents Destroyed. Believed To Be Of Incendiary Origin (From our Liberty Correspondent.) - Early on Friday morning the large barn owned by Wm M. Roosa, situated about one and a half miles from Liberty, was completely destroyed by fire together with sixteen head of cattle and several outbuildings. The flames had gained sufficient headway before being discovered by [unreadable] Smith, a neighboring farmer, that an attempt to extinguish the flames proved futile. Mr. Roosa is unable to account for the cause of the conflagration, but expressed his belief that it may have been of incendiary origin, as he noticed the blaze raging furiously at several parts of the building at the same time, and a hay stack outside the barn showed evidence of having been started in several places. As there have been numerous fires of unknown origin in this vicinity of late his theory is plausible. The building, with cattle and all farm equipment, were a total loss and only partly covered by insurance. ("Sullivan County Review" Roscoe, NY, (Vol XXI, No. 31)October 22, 1914, pg. 1 col. 4)

FIFTY YEARS MARRIED AND FIFTY YEARS ON SAME FARM
On Thursday, February 11, Mr. and Mrs. W.M. Roosa celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of their wedding at their home, The Shady Grove House, about two miles east of Liberty. Mr. and Mrs. Roosa have lived on the same place since their marriage fifty years ago. There were about seventy-five relatives and friends who gathered to make the fiftieth anniversary a pleasant joyous event. Although Mr. Roosa is now in his 75th year he dances a square set along with his neighbor, Thomas Kane, as cleverly as a youth of twenty. A most pleasing time was had by all who attended.1

The following obituaries appeared in the two local papers "The Liberty Register" and "The Monticello Watchman". The second obituary contains numerous errors. The corrections are in parenthesis following the erroneous information
