[29997] It would make sense that Bertha's father, George, lived with her and her second husband. George was a stonecutter. I have a lot of info on that side of the family. George's parents were born in Germany and came to NY in 1841.

1860 census PA susquehanna harmony image 16 page 168 #345 in book image 27 has a Jessie A Lacy Female 17 years July 9, 2000 - Talked with Elsie Lacey (daughter of Silas) at the Lacey family reunion about RJ Lacey and George Lacey She said RJ came from one of the Southern states (Kentucky according to Harold Lacey) and lived in Lanesboro Pa for a while where his children were born. When George was 12 they went out west by boat on the great lakes. They came back later and lived in Lanesboro again. She said George lived off the land and was a hunter/trapper in the lake above Ithica and even spent time working on the Erie canal. Harold Lacey said that George never worked a day in his life. After a while he went back to Lanesboro where his children were born. From Evelyn Boyles - grangdaughter of Elsie Lacey (Silas Daughter) Info says: R.J. went to Pa from N.Y. c 1858. R.J., Clarinda and children went west between 1860 and April 1876. Possibly N.D., S.D., Waukegon, Ill, or Muskegan, Mich. [I think I got this last info from Barb Ingraham.] From Evelyn Boyles - Feb 18, 2001 I just reread a letter Barbara Ingraham wrote to my mother back in 1978 and I think there is more information there that I overlooked. Without copying the whole 6 pages here are some highlights: The 1880 census of Lanesboro shows R.J. Lacey. Previous to 1860 and until 1880 he went by Jesse. The family came to Lanesboro, Pa from New York State about 1858. In the 1860 census "they told the census taker that all of their children had been born in New York State except for the last Mary, who they said was one year old and had been born in Pa. W. Scott and Ella had not been born yet." Barb found out about the "R" from the Susquehanna County Historical Society in Montrose, Pa. She also has a copy of George's death certificate. It says his father Jesse was born at Cape Vincent, Delaware. [ we have all found out since then there is no such place, and assume he meant Cape Vincent, NY, Jefferson County] . " The census records say that RJ Lacey was born in New York State in 1817, and his wife Clarinda was born 1824 in New York State." " George's death certificate says his mother was born in Greene, Chenango County. " The 1880 census of Lanesboro says R.J.'s father was born in Pa and R.J.'s mother was born in Mass. both of Clarinda's parents were born in New York State." RJ and Clarinda's children birth order: 1. Jessie m. John Van Auken, 2. William C. m. Minnie ?, 3 Silas W. , 4. Clarinda Minerva, 5. George m. Evelyn Gates, 6. R. Jesse Jr. m. Amy ?, 7 Mary (Mate) m. Silas Bennedict (Barb's spelling), 8 Winfield Scott m Eva Walton, 9 Ella m. Mr. Banks. "George's death certificate says b. 5 Nov 1853; however the 1860 census says 1847/48." Clarinda is supposed to be buried in Broome County. " Ella had a daughter named Fern." " R.Jesse and R. Jesse Jr. were both carpenters. In 1860 their property in Lanesboro was worth $1,000. Clarinda was doing the business in the years 1876 and 1877 as she alone signed for the sale and purchase of real estate." When Clarinda died in 1900 [ check this date] " William was the executor of the estate, and Winfield Scott bought her property from the estate. " Please note that Barbara uses Lacey as the regular spelling throughout. "Clarinda's siblings were: John, Wiley, Almira, Lucinda, and Anna." She was the daughter of Stiles Fairchild b. 1807 Watertown, Ct. Stiles, s/o Bille and Anna; his siblings were William, Lyman, Hannah, Julia, Polly, Sally, Nancy, Susan, and Ania. Stiles, Bille, and Bille's father Joseph Fairchild all moved to Chenango County in early 1800's I apologize for not having paid closer attention to this stuff that was in my possession. I am seriously sorry for both of us as I am sure you have spent as many hours hunting for this info on the net as I have. Anyhow we now know where RJ's parents came from, now we need their names. xxx Cemetery - http://www.rootsweb.com/~nybroome/brnswic1.htm 1870 Census state - WI County - Fond du Lac Town - Lamartine 207-215 Rebember Lacy - age 33 - Farmer $700 - born NY Clurinda - age 36 - Keeping house - born NY Jessie - age 27 - Farm Labourer - born NY William - age 25 - Farm Labourer - born NY Silas W. - age 24 - Farm Labourer - born NY Clarinda - age 23 - Domestic Servant - born PENN George - age 17 - Farm Labourer - born PENN Jessie - age 16 - Farm Labourer - born PENN Mary - age 11 - Attending school - born WI Winfield - age 8 - Attending school - born WI Sarah - age 6 - attending school - born WI 206-214 Wright S.
