from Gladys Lacey Martin gdaughter of George:
It was my understanding that george never worked a day in his life because
he was lazy. If it's the right guy - he lived off his father-in-law! His
inlaws were not thrilled when he married their daughter (Evelyn Gates)
because he was shiftless. The father-in-law (Mr. Gates) built boats and
George helped - whatever little he did. When he lived with Grandma Lacey,
he did almost nothing to help around the place. And that's the story my Mom
tells about her grandfather!!
From Evelyn Boyles - Elsie Gdaughter
This is what is written on the back of a postcard that was sent to my
grandfather Silas.
" Wal Sile do you no the old cuss on the other side it is a Skink hunter
and
he has cot Just 20 this fall i tride to get Buff picture But the dam fool
wont take a dogs picture i sold 13 Skink i got 22 dollars for them i hav 7
more now i am well But Joe is sick he had to quit work on the track your
check is here for you Wal rite Som time i may Bee up i dont no So Long"
It was from George. So in his own hand writting he did something.
Two weeks
before Ma died I stayed with her a few days while my son was in N.C. A few
of the things she told me was that: George had driven a mule team on the
Erie Canal, and that he had met Evelyn/Evaline/Eveline (Grandpa said
Eveline) in the Finger Lakes region, and that latter on they lived at
French
Woods which I think is in Sullivan County. Apparently Eveline and the kids
picked blackberries to make money for groceries. The part that I get
confused at is just how much Indian blood there is in her. Ma's story was
that Eveline's mother had been raped by an Indian Chief. I have no idea
which one or from what tribe, once upon a time Grandpa Silas said that she
was Shoshonee, but I know Shoshonees lived in the far west. If it was a
tribe near the Finger Lakes area they were supposed to have been "subdued"
years before. At the time I was asking these questions of my mother (Elsie)
I was regretting that I didn't have a tape recorder, and now it is
definately too late.
I have a postcard, that I wouldn't part with on a bet, that Wile sent to
Grandpa of a train wreck that he was in at Deerpark. I will be certain to
send you a copy of it anyhow. It reads, " this is our smash up dont it look
nice I was on the 140 When it Landed to the grown Will Mark X Whair I Was
in
the Rubish heap Will Send you all one When I Can Wiley" Since the stamp was
ripped off it's hard to read the date but it looks like M-- 1914, and was
mailed at Oneida.
I am also the lucky possessor of a candlestick that belonged to Eveline. It
is a citrine Dolphin that Grandpa said George and Eveline got at the Worlds
Fair in the 1880's, Philadelphia I think. There were originally a pair of
them and I understand that if I had them both they would be worth nearly a
thousand $. But, I am a person that values it as belonging to someone from
the past and I will never sell it. As it is I have to keep it hidden in the
bedroom for fear that it might get broken if it were in the livingroom. It
only takes one fruitcake in your house to do that.
We both need to write to Barbara Ingraham (Joe's granddaughter). She was
trying to put Lacey info together way back in the 1970's, she's in her
early
50's so write to: Barbara L. Ingraham, 114 Williams Steet, Groton, N.Y.
13073. I don't think she has a computer leastwise I could find no E address
for her.Her husbands name is Raymond.
Oh, I also have a picture of a Charly and Stiles Fairchild who were cousins
to Grandpa, Wile and Joe. Fairchilds later, what I have on Laceys now:

problems with the scanner yesterday, it blew up a small pic to a full page
