[29813] Henry’s father and mother who were Daniel Sheeley and Polly Divine Sheeley lived in a cabin on what was known as the Upper Place. There was gooseberry bushes and red currant bushes along a wall of a small field which was their garden just below where the cabin was located. Many years after beautiful lilacs bloomed along the side where cabin was located. It was on this Upper Place where a large flock of sheep roamed over the hillside. On the lower place where Henry and Hannah lived, they always had a flock of geese, mainly for feather beds and pillows. The nests were in different places in the pasture field in back of the house and were laid up of field stone. For a number of years the butter was churned by dog power. The churning machine was treadled by a large dog named Tige.”

[13803] I'll try to codense what I have from Brinkman(1945). 1st generation Jan Coster Van Auken was a trader in Albany NY in 1654 to 1672, and perhaps later. He was a blacksmith and a dealer in houses andlots. He was a commissioner appointed to treat with the Indians, and could speak the launguage of the six nations. On Dec.22,1654, he had ashop at what is now steamboat landing and adjoining the first Dutch church. He agreed that the church should be built on his lot. His home was at the corner of Broadway and Maiden Lane in Albany. In 1655 on Feb. 2, Cornelis Vos gave names to some of the houses in Albany. He named Jan Van Auken's home the "Quart measure".March 4, 1690, Jan Vinnagen and two others were ordered to inspect goods in the houses at Albany, for goods that may be exported. His wife was Elsie Jans. Their child was Mariness born about 1660. On Mat 7, 1661 he was granted a lot in Beverwyck.
