Let me guess (not knowing a heck of a lot about geneolgical terms), would CCVA be my first cousin five times removed? I see the departure in the trees at the progeny of A.G and Maria Louw.
Some other tidbits that stand out from my memories of my grandfather, Rufus Cole Van Aken, and his studies and what I was told:
I guess there was a painter by the name of John Vanderlyn who is related to me/us. He did the Columbus landing painting in the (?) NYC public library or maybe it's the Statehouse in Albany. He had something to do with Theodesia Burr and A. Hamilton. I believe Aaron Burr may have been a financial backer for Vanderlyn. My memory fails me on this. But I do recall one thing, being an artist myself: to paraphrase, Vanderlyn wrote in a letter or diary that his money woes might have been much less during his life had he gone the straight and narrow with his painting carreer by doing portraits instead of his neo-classical fantasies. The Empire style of furniture and corresponding style of architecture (that this fascination with things Classical spawned) were all the rage in the early 1800's apparently. One of those idealized Greco-Roman oil scenes of Vanderlyn's (a small one and not very good, in my opinion) was hung in my grandparents' parlor for all my childhood. What became of it after they passed away, I do not know. I assume it went with my aunt Elaine (Van Aken) Reddinger out to Cailfornia.
I also have a very distant memory of my greatgrandmother Glennie Pine (Rufus' mother). She wore heavy and dark full-length Victorian garb till her dying day, and I have a vague memory of the house on Flatbush Ave in Brooklyn where she lived, though I never knew the address. In my memory of that house and that one visit as a young child, I have the impression of a dark and heavily ornate decor. I was told by someone that hers was the last regular, or one-family, house that existed on Flatbush. This would have been in the very early 1960's.
Of my greatgrandfather, Elting, I have been told he spent most of his adult life in a sanitorium for the insane. This isn't hearsay. I do not know what type of illness he had, but he was there until he died. In those days, any sort of nerve disease was poorly understood, so I just don't know. There may be no way of discovering any details about that. Niether do I know where that asylum might have been, though I assume it was in the Kingston area.
One thing you might want to change is the spelling of my son's first name... it's Nicholas, not Nicolas. He is at the University of Massachusetts on the first leg of getting a degree in Electronics Engineering. My former wife, Wendy, and I came up with his name not being aware of the significance Van Aken-wise. My daughter's name is Eva (born 1982) and they live with their Mom in the hills of Western Massachusetts, not unlike the Catskills where I spent a lot of summers in Shokan at my grandparents' Chalet Elaine, as they called it.
I have recently been remarried, having been divorced from Wendy in 1988. My new wife's name is Brenda (formerly, Brenda Billard) and I have moved from Massachusetts to live with her in her native Canada. We are in a suburb of Toronto. I moved here five weeks ago, and believe it or not, we met via the Internet!
Somewhere there are actual descriptions of some of the more recent relatives in my lineage as written by my grandfather from his memories of having met them, grown up with them. I mean people from the second half of the 1800's. I will try and find those papers.
My father died of a brain tumor in 1962 and my mother passed away in 1976 still fairly young in her middle forties, never having recovered from the event of his death. That is my opinion and that of her closest friend/neighbor.
I am self-studying computer generated graphics for illustration and design right now and also trying to find a low-profile part-time job to keep up payments on my credit cards. My wife is a bookeeper for a paper supplier. My daughter is dating an artist... I am biting my tongue about what artists have to offer financially over the long term :o)
